UNITED STATES -- "Identity Thief" steals the top slot at the box office this weekend. The new comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy snagged over $36 million in its opening weekend.

Despite the snow storm this weekend, Universal Pictures says the film had a solid start.

Falling to number two, the paranormal romance "Warm Bodies" brought in about 11 and a half million this week.

Brand new this weekend and coming in at number three, was "Side Effects," starring Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum. The new thriller about the side effects of an anti-depressant drug took in about ten million.

Fourth on the list was “Silver Linings Playbook,” starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. It's a film that's gotten quite a bit of Oscar buzz. “Silver Linings” is up for eight academy awards.

And rounding out the top five was “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.” That one brought in just over five million this weekend.
