UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica Police are asking for your help locating a man they say attacked and shot his ex-girlfriend in the back of the head.

Police say a woman was attacked by Jerry McNair, 37, at her home around 9 p.m. Monday. She told police she was assaulted and choked with a USB cord to the point where she lost consciousness.

The victim woke up Tuesday afternoon and went to the hospital. That's where doctors discovered a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Police say she was shot at point-blank range.

Detectives believe McNair is still in Utica and is considered armed and dangerous.

"We're just asking for the public’s help to try to get us information. It's possible somebody could be helping him evade police, maybe not even knowingly," said Utica Police Sgt. Steve Hauck.

Officers are not releasing information about the victim's condition.

Police say McNair has been in trouble with the law before. He was charged with first degree sexual abuse against a child in September last year and is currently wanted in Utica for unrelated charges.

If anyone has information, call Utica Police at (315) 223-3510. All calls will be kept confidential.
