ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- During a stop in the North Country, Governor Andrew Cuomo spoke about a proposal to raise the St. Lawrence County sales tax.

Local officials have pushed for a one percent sales tax increase to help balance its budget. To raise it, the state legislature must pass a bill allowing the county legislature to vote on the increase. The bill must also be signed by the governor before the county can vote on the increase.

"Matters like that, I respect the locality and I respect the local legislators so if it's passed, I'll sign it," said Governor Cuomo.

Officials in St. Lawrence County say the one percent increase could provide millions of dollars that could help ease the burden of high property tax bills.
