Multiple accidents on I-81 this morning
ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Lake effect snow is still coming down across Central New York and looks to continue for much of the day. This winter weather has made for slippery roads and white-out conditions in many areas. More than half a dozen accidents shut down portions of Interstate 81 for several hours on Friday.
Police say whiteout visibility and slippery road conditions caused more than seven accidents on the stretch of Interstate 81 between Tully and LaFayette. The highway was pretty slick and traffic was slow-moving on Interstate 81 in Syracuse this morning. There were crashes on both Interstate 81 North and southbound in Tully. Interstate 81 southbound is now reopened, but the northbound side remains closed.
Onondaga County Sheriff's Department and State Police responded to two multi-car accidents on Interstate 81 southbound and one on Interstate 81 northbound. They say about 20 vehicles total, including several tractor trailers, were involved. Luckily, only a couple of people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Jeffrey Raub, New York State Police Captain says, "It's amazing. The public does slow down when they encounter some of this weather, but they don't slow down enough; and usually, there's one or two people that hit the breaks. They spin out, and then everybody has to stop abruptly; and they can't do it in time."
Authorities say the reopening of Interstate 81 northbound was delayed because of an oil spill from one of the tractor trailers. Police want to remind you that if you get into an accident to stay in your car where you're safest.

The snow continues to cause problems for drivers, and not just during the morning rush. Emergency crews are on the scene of a crash on I-81 near Tully. I-81 northbound remains closed. Our Katie Gibas joins us now on the phone with more.
