WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- As expected, the Watertown city council has pulled out of a proposed project to bring electric car charging stations to the area.
According to Mayor Jeff Graham's online blog, the city attorney says "giving away electricity violates the States Constitution which bars outright gifts to public resources."
National Grid came to the city with a state sponsored program that would offer electric car owners free electricity by plugging into a public charging station. Had the city jumped on board, it would have been responsible for paying some of the installation and the electricity bill each month.
