Syracuse to add safe greenway walkways for students

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The city of Syracuse has been making infrastructure improvements to school areas since 2009, but what about making safe space for students who walk and bike to school?
Mayor Stephanie Miner announced a more than $380,000 grant that will help develop safe walkways, called greenways, to neighborhoods and schools. The funding will be used to construct greenways that will connect Bellevue, Roberts, and Danforth Magnet schools.
Syracuse's transportation planner said, given the nation's obesity epidemic, now is a great time to implement physical activity into children's lives.
"If we could find way to encourage children to be walking and biking and basically have them incorporate that into their lives at a young age, maybe they'll be more likely to incorporate into their lives as they grow up and have healthier living in general," Paul Mercurio, Transportation Planner.
Mercurio said this is the first grant awarded by the DOT for greenways in the Northeast.
