CARTHAGE, N.Y. -- The Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce is sitting on about $200,000 in grant money that it needs to give away to residents very soon.

The Villages of Carthage and West Carthage were awarded $400,000 from New York State as part of a housing rehabilitation program. The money can go to low income-eligible homeowners and rental unit owners. But so far, only about $200,000 has been given away.

The chamber is looking for residents to apply for a grant of up to $25,000 and it needs them fast because the work has to be done by the end of the year. Any left over money goes back to the state.

"It's a wonderful program that can help them. I mean, we've gotten several people who've had the program done, the renovations to their homes. They were very happy and they wouldn't have been able to do it any other way," said Lori Borland.

The money can help fix roofs, windows, siding, floors and more. You have to stay in your home for five years after the renovations in order to not have to pay back the grant.

To apply for the money, you must be resident of Carthage or West Carthage and can call the chamber at (315) 493-3590.
