VESTAL, N.Y. -- A Vestal woman is dead after being pulled from the icy Susquehanna River.

The 54-year-old was reported missing from her home on Loretta Lane Wednesday morning. When police investigated, they saw tracks leading to the river and found her underneath the ice.

Emergency and rescue crews from across the area tried to save her.

"They were able to break through the ice where they saw the woman and bring her through the hole that she had slipped into the river through," Vestal Police Chief John Butler said.

The woman was taken to Wilson Hospital, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Foul play is not suspected.
