NEW YORK STATE -- Retailers say the looming fiscal cliff had an effect on their bottom line this holiday season.

Retail sales were still up, but store owners are looking toward the next couple of days to boost their sales.

Shopping from Christmas to New Year's actually accounts for 15 percent of many merchant's holiday sale revenue. And while many stores are offering some big sales and hoping people are looking to redeem gift cards, retailers are still keeping one eye on what's happening Washington.

"We certainly hope they come to some kind of resolution on the fiscal cliff. And that the sales retailers are offering are attractive enough to get people in the stores, and that those gift cards are burning holes in people's pockets, and they want to get out there and redeem them," said Rebecca Flach of the New York State Retail Council.

Retailers say they're also offering sales, trying to get rid of winter inventory, if you can believe it, to get ready for spring.
