Former town supervisor accused of embezzlement

By: Web Staff

PITCAIRN, N.Y. -- A former town supervisor in the North country is accused of embezzling town funds and trying to cover it up.

The state Attorney General's office says 39-year-old Susan Smith embezzled more than $35,000 from the Town of Pitcairn in St. Lawrence County.

Smith faces several charges, including third-degree grand larceny and tampering with physical evidence.

The AG's office says she made unauthorized payments to herself and others from town accounts at Community Bank NA where she also worked as a branch manager.

During an investigation, the attorney general says Smith produced false paperwork showing she had credited the money back to the town.
