Customers crowded the inside of the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City early Friday morning. It was all part of the Black Friday rush. Our Melissa Kakareka asked shoppers if they found what they were looking for.

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. -- It was 6 a.m. and the JC Penny inside the Oakdale Mall had just opened its doors.

For most people, it was just one stop of many on a shopping spree that began as early as Thursday afternoon.

"Last night we went to Sears and sat out there from 3 to 7 p.m. just to not get what we wanted. Then, we slept til 4:30 and got up and came here," said Cortland resident Katie Terrazas.

"Last night, my boyfriend and I went to Sears and waited in line for an hour for a tablet and got one of the last ones. We got home at 10 p.m. after shopping at some of the stores downtown and then got up and came back here," said Owego resident Olivia Turner.

Shoppers say they picked up items such as toaster ovens and griddles, as well as electronics and clothing. Many people believe they were able to snag a good deal on items for themselves and those on their holiday shopping list.

"A lot of the stores are a certain percent off of like all the stuff in store so I think there's a lot of good deals," said Sidney resident Cora Martindale.

It was a bonding experience for some customers, especially those who make Black Friday shopping a yearly event.

"I've done it since I was 13, so it's the tradition. I don't care if I don't buy anything," said Terrazas.

"The three of us go every year and then we go and get breakfast," said Turner.

And despite the time on the clock, everybody seemed to be enjoying the rush.

"It's fun to be walking around the mall in the middle of the morning realizing we're all up and about at this time of morning," said Virginia resident Laura Botteler.

Now the only thing left to do is get a little bit of sleep.
