CANTON, N.Y. -- The Canton School District has cut 42 positions in the last two years. That's about 20 percent of their total staff. The fiscal climate doesn't look any better for next year.

Superintendent William Gregory explained the school's budget situation during a public meeting on Monday. He said that without change, the school district will not be able to meet the needs of the students.

If the cuts in state aid continue, the school could be forced to cut additional positions and programs, such as pre-K and athletics. Gregory says the school is the victim of an unfair practice at the state level that allocates school aid.

"We need to take a look at the funding formulas. Those need to be, essentially, rebuilt from the ground up," said William Gregory, Canton Superintendent.

Gregory says that community members wishing to help can get involved by writing their state elected officials and ask for change.
