ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The work continues to assemble all of the ballots from Tuesday's voting. In Onondaga County, the attention is on absentee and affidavit votes cast in a race for Congress.

Democrat Dan Maffei appears to have won the race to recapture the seat he lost in 2010, but republican Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle is still holding out, hoping the count of absentees will erase Maffei's lead of more than 14,500 votes.

The review of the votes is expected to begin next week.

“It does take some time. I know people want instant results, but we have to make sure people who voted absentee didn't vote in person too. Have to make sure people that voted affidavit didn't go to another poll site where their name was. There's a lot to it, because we don't want anyone voting twice,” said Onondaga County Elections Commissioner Helen Kiggins.

Buerkle would have to capture more than 80 percent support from the absentee ballots in the new 24th District to reverse the outcome. That is considered highly unlikely.
