CANTON, N.Y. -- As snowflakes fell in the North Country, some people were thinking green.

People in Canton came together to plant four trees honoring four former mayors. The trees were planted at the Bend in the River Park. It’s part of an ongoing effort by the Canton Tree Planting Committee to add more greenery to the village.

Former mayors Ruth Blankman Barbour, Marilyn Mintener, Bob Wells and Charlotte Ramsay were recognized.

Organizers say planting a tree is a fitting way to honor their service

"It seems like an appropriate way to give long-lasting recognition of people and deeds and add to the attractiveness of the community," Canton resident Judy Gibson said.

Four more additional trees will be planted in the spring to honor four more former Canton mayors.
