NYSEG offers safety tips for Sandy

By: Web Staff

STATEWIDE -- As Sandy approaches and wind begins to pick up, NYSEG has a few tips. They ask that if you see a downed power line, stay as far away from it as you can. NYSEG warns that even dead lines can be dangerous. Also, be sure to stay out of flooded basements because energized wires or outlets below the water line can pose a serious hazard.

They said if a basement or home is in danger of flooding, customers should contact their utilities to turn off service. And lastly, never run emergency generators indoors or in a garage. Be sure to keep them in a well ventilated area, away from windows or doors, and make sure you carefully read the instructions.
