ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Playing its first game without Mike Welch at the helm since 1993, the Ithaca College football team made a valiant effort before falling at No. 24 St. John Fisher 24-21 on Saturday.
Welch is on an indefinite medical leave following successful heart bypass surgery on Tuesday. The Bombers rallied from a 14-0 deficit in the third quarter to lead 17-14 in the fourth but the Cardinals got a late touchdown then an interception to avoid the upset bid.
Clay Ardoin rushed 22 times for 140 yards and a touchdown to lead Ithaca, which has lost three games in a row after starting 4-0.
