PORT LEYDEN, N.Y. -- Residents of Port Leyden were able to get a peek at a new business coming to town. Barrett Paving Materials is creating a new stone quarry on the northern edge of the Lewis County village. The company wanted to provide their neighbors with a chance to see what the operation is all about.

According to Barrett Paving Materials, neighbors could occasionally get jittery, because blasting will be part of the process. Several seismographs have been placed in cellars around town to measure any effects, and will alert residents when blasting is imminent. The company looked at various sites around the area, but liked the quality of limestone at the particular location they chose, which is a detail that is important to everyone.

"We use stones every day, we drive on them, we live in them, or we go shopping in them. So, it touches everybody's life," noted Sylvain Gross, Barrett Materials Regional Manager.

About a dozen employees from the company's former site, located between Port Leyden and Boonville, will transition to the quarry over the next few years.
