NEW YORK STATE -- If you dined out at Applebees Thursday night, then you already know just how special the service was. Restaurants across the state teamed up with local police departments, having officers greet customers, bus tables and serve dinner.

The effort, dubbed "Law and Orders," was designed to support the more than 55,000 athletes who compete in the New York Special Olympics. Troopers say without the extra money, many of those kids would not be able to make the trip.

"What it does is enable them to actually attend the games, which is going to be this year in December. It allows them to actually attend where as some of them may not be able to whether it's economical reasons or travel reasons,” New York State Police Troop D Public Information Officer Jack Keller.

Some of the athletes also joined the officers at the restaurant, sporting their medals from past Olympics.

In all, they hoped to raise more than $30,000 statewide.
