One of the unfortunate realities of military life is bouncing from home to home. Soldiers typically only spend a few years in one place. Moving becomes habit. Our Brian Dwyer takes a look at a website that's helping those soldiers get rid of some items before a big move and pocket some travel cash as a result.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- It happens to almost all military families. It's called PCS. Permanent Change of Station.

Minda Agner's family recently came to Fort Drum from Fort Benning in Georgia.

"We had our suitcases. I had my daughter, our son and my dog," she said about her move. "That's all we could fit in the car."

While the military does cover some moving and travel costs, not everything Agner had could come north, so she sold it. But in not traditional yard sale fashion. She joined a website that touts itself as a giant online yard sale, bookoo.com, and made $1,600 before moving.

"All that money was able to be used for, if we needed to eat out when we were on our way. We were able to use it for lodging and little things like that that needed to be taken care of," Agner said.

It's a story that bookoo founder Adam Allgaier loves to hear. He and his brother started the site out of a love for yard sales and technology. Allgaier says the military market is exactly why bookoo works.

"Every two years, they're recycling," Allgaier said. "They're getting new furniture or the new gadgets. So they're moving every two years and it's a perfect opportunity for them to buy new stuff and get rid of their old stuff."

Allgaier says the site is similar to Craigslist. It's free, but comes without the adult content and it’s much more focused on buying and selling locally.

"Neighbor to neighbor. It's more friendly," Allgaier said. "It's more safe. You control the transaction."

There's also an extra focus on military families that Agner likes.

"These are people that are living in the same situations or have in the past lived in the same situation as you," Agner said.

"Bookoo is where ever they go." Allgaier said. "They're comfortable, familiar and it's a really tight-knit group, close community of buyers and sellers."

Of course, no website is guaranteed to be free from scammers, so it’s recommended for you to do your homework on everyone you are making a deal with.

Bookoo has a Smartphone app and for those yard sale traditionalists, it also maps out when and where local yard sales are happening.
