UNITED STATES -- When the Big East basketball season tips off in a couple of months, it will be without one of the most identifiable faces in the conference. UConn coach Jim Calhoun announced Thursday he is retiring.

The 70-year-old Calhoun led the Huskies to three national championships in his 26 years as head coach. He has 873 career wins, the sixth most in men's division one history.

Calhoun has dealt with multiple health issues over the past several years, most recently fracturing a hip in a bike accident last month.

At his announcement Thursday, he called himself one of the luckiest people alive.

"I coached our teams and allowed our teams to be a vehicle to shine a light on this very, very special university," Calhoun said.

Assistant coach Kevin Ollie is expected to take over for Calhoun.
