NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Crowds gathered this morning at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan to remember those who lost their lives in the attacks there 11 years ago.

Six moments of silence were held throughout the morning. Two marked the times the planes hit the towers, two others for when the towers came down, one for the attack at the Pentagon and one for the plane crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Different in this year's ceremony, no politicians spoke.The decision was made to keep the focus on the victims and their families.

Throughout the morning, family members read off the names of those lost.

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Another ceremony took place at the Pentagon. President Obama laid a wreath at the site and observed a moment of silence. He said we'll never forget the thousands of lives lost.

"But no matter how many years pass, no matter how many times we come together on this ground, know this: we will never be alone. Your loved ones will never be forgotten. They are endured in the hearts of our nation because through their sacrifice, they helped us make the America we are today."

The vice president also laid a wreath at the site of the plane crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Passengers on that flight fought against the hijackers, before the plane reached its presumed target in Washington.
