NEW YORK STATE -- An annual inspection of the New York State Canal System is now underway. It kicked off Tuesday morning at the western-most spot of the Erie Canal in Buffalo.

Over the next two months, officials will be assessing the 524-mile State Canal System.
It's a tradition dating back more than 180 years when Governor DeWitt Clinton did the same when he opened the Erie Canal.

"It’s basically the same canal that opened up in 1825. There's a lot of things to look at and opportunities to find problems before they come problems," said New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian Stratton.

The inspection tour will wrap up in the Champlain Canal in October.
