Soldiers injured by lightning during training at Fort Drum

By: Web Staff

FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Ten soldiers were injured following a lightning strike at Fort Drum. Military officials say the soldiers were from a New Jersey Army National Guard unit and were training at Fort Drum when the lightning hit around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

First Sergeant David Moore says the soldiers were taken to Samaritan Medical Center and Carthage Area Hospital for treatment and were released with minor injuries.

About 2,000 50th Infantry members are at the Drum for a 15-day training exercise that started last weekend. Moore says the soldiers were at a meeting at one of the ranges when the lightning struck. He says he isn't sure whether the tent they were in was hit or if the soldiers themselves were.
