PENNSYLVANIA -- Pennsylvania residents who have been taking advantage of the state's general assistance program will stop receiving payments this Wednesday.

The program provides cash assistance to around 70,000 Pennsylvanians. It has been helping vulnerable residents, such as senior citizens and the disabled, since the Great Depression, but it lost in the latest budget cuts. Governor Tom Corbett proposed the cut back in February, arguing that eliminating the $200 monthly payments would save the state about $150 million a year.

Officials say those affected by the cut can receive aid through other programs.
