UNITED STATES -- ESPN is hoping to have part of a lawsuit filed against the network by the wife of Bernie Fine dismissed.

Laurie Fine is suing the network and two employees for libel over its coverage of sex abuse allegations against the former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach. She is seeking unspecified damages, an apology and a retraction.

This week, lawyers for ESPN filed a motion to dismiss one of claims of libel, referring to a January report on the network covering accuser Bobby Davis' lawsuit against SU basketball coach Jim Boeheim. In that report, ESPN mentions an affidavit filed in court where Davis alleged that Laurie Fine had sexual relationships with SU basketball players.

The network's lawyers argue that the coverage was a "fair and true" summary of the affidavit and therefore not libelous.

If granted, the motion would only dismiss this one complaint. The suit would still move forward based on five other claims.
