Hottest jobs at Darien Lake

By: Web Staff

This summer has been tough on people with hot jobs. YNN's Geoff Redick went out to Darien Lake to find out who has it hardest at the amusement park.

DARIEN, N.Y. -- At an amusement park on a hot summer day, water is everywhere, unless you're a giant beaver.

Jon Yepez, 19, has been performing as a dancing beaver at Darien Lake Theme Park for nearly three months now. Tuesday was by far his hottest day on the job.

"I recently found out that our stage right here is 10 degrees hotter than anywhere else in the park," said Yepez.

Just walking around Darien Lake on Tuesday was uncomfortable, but imagine having to wear an added 30-40 pounds of padded beaver suit.

"I don't think someone who wasn't physically healthy could do something like this, I mean, it's rough," explained Yepez.

There are some cooling mechanisms in the suit.

"We have an ice vest that we wear that tries to keep us cool. We have a camel pack with water. There's a little fan in the head, kind of helps," Yepez tells us.

But inevitably, the performers still end up dripping sweat.

"It sounds cheesy, but honestly, seeing the kids happy, you get a little feeling inside. Even if I'm in the beaver costume, it's funny. It makes you happy that the kids are happy. You kind of think about, 'Hey, I was there one day.' And you know, if I can make them smile for an hour, it's worth it," said Yepez.
