BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- After doing his best to prevent a ban on camping in public parks in Binghamton, Mayor Matt Ryan's veto is overridden by City Council.

In the same 6-1 vote that passed the original legislation, Council members approved an override of the Mayor's veto at their business meeting Wednesday evening.

Ryan stated he decided to veto the legislation because of concerns about an infringement of First Amendment rights.

Occupy Binghamton protesters have also cried foul, claiming the ordinance was enacted to suppress their activism, a notion councilors have denied.

Anyone wishing to camp in a City park must now obtain a permit and proper liability insurance.
