ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Quality Inn in Massena was evacuated early Monday morning after a fire broke out in the electrical room of the hotel. Firefighters were on scene around 6:15 a.m. after an employee at the hotel said the lights were flickering and that she could smell smoke.
The fire turned out to be minor, but the hotel is still without power and hotel management said they are not sure how long the hotel will be closed.
"There wasn't a lot of fire, but there was a lot of smoke from the cables burning. There was at least three cables that fed into the panel boxes that had burned through and there was some insulation in the basement as well that had burned and was giving off quite a bit of black smoke," said Joe Lacks, Deputy Fire Investigator.
Fire officials said everyone in the hotel was woken up and taken to the Congregational Church across the street. They said many people were confused because the fire alarms in the hotel were not going off. Fire officials said it was because the fire was contained to the basement. An electrician was on scene to look at the extent of the damage.
No one was injured.
