Manhunt ends peacefully

TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- A three day manhunt for a Fort Drum soldier who escaped from military custody is finally over. State police arrested Private First Class Russell Marcum, 20, this afternoon in Dryden, in Tompkins County.

Troopers said Marcum turned himself in without incident on Bradshaw Road about two miles away from where they found the stolen car he was believed to be driving.

The search for Marcum began Thursday, after he escaped from Fort Drum where he was being held on a Burglary charge.

He allegedly stole two vehicles while on the run and police had advised neighbors near the Cortland/Tompkins County border to keep their doors locked and be on the lookout because they knew he was in the area.

In the end, they say they were glad it ended the way it did.

Lt. Daniel Hodack said, “We're just glad that it came to a somewhat quick conclusion. A lot of manpower here, a lot of resources here and we're just glad our efforts panned out."

About a hundred law enforcement officers were involved in the search for Marcum Saturday.

He was arraigned in the Town of Lansing Court on charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree, and was remanded to the Tompkins County jail.

A bench warrant was issued by the Village of Theresa Court for Failure to Appear for a Court Appearance on a charge of Burglary 3rd Degree.
