Paying for a car, or not having one, can be tough on college students, but now North Country students will have a new way to get around as some colleges have teamed up with Zipcars. Our Rachael Paradis has more on the partnership and how students see it benefiting them.

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Sam McCaffrey is a senior at SUNY Potsdam and even though he has a car at college, he knows how difficult it can be to get around.

But now thanks to Aipcars on campus, students can overcome lots of hurdles.

McCaffrey said, “It's a way to keep mobile."

Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam have teamed up with Zipcars to bring the rental cars to campus. All students have to do is become a member for a small fee and pay an hourly or daily fee to take the car, which can be reserved for just hours or days at a time.

McCaffrey said, "Plattsburg, to Watertown, Syracuse, to anywhere. Even to the grocery store in town."

Michael Welch, a Clarkson University senior, said, "Come completely bundled with insurance, gas and all those other necessities you need to take a car out on the road. Very convenient."

College leaders agree that the Zipcars give them a competitive edge over other universities and put them in the front seat of forward thinking.

Richard Mattimore, the SUNY Potsdam Sustainability and Operations Coordinator said that the Zipcars are a, “Great opportunity for the students and the staff to lessen their impact and it promotes a sense of community."

Anthony Collins the Clarkson University President said, “We want to demonstrate how to be more sustainable and you can't do that more than with practical applications. Zipcars, so they cannot just see and hear about it, but actually participate."

And with the future and students wallets in mind the colleges hope the cars will be a success.
