POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Cyclists and pedestrians have something to be excited about in Potsdam as crews broke ground Thursday for the Walk-Bike Program.

The program, funded through federal grants, will make streets more friendly to cyclists and pedestrians. It will include new sidewalks in several areas, designated bikeways and street repaving. A new 'shared roadway' will also be built for cyclists.

Clarkson University student Alex McAndrew said, "I ride to class just about every day and taking Clarkson Avenue and some of the other roads, they are full of potholes and it's a hazard and cars are zipping by."

The program is expected to finish in 2011. It will also help the town transition to greener ways.
