ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A bridge replacement project on 481 over Kirkville Road is set to begin today. Beginning at 9 a.m., 481 North will close to all traffic at the Kirkville Road Exit 5E. Detours will be in place through Monday.
This project is really going to impact commuters in two different ways. First, it's going to impact drivers on 481 northbound making their way from areas like Syracuse and Dewitt. It will also impact drivers east and west on Kirkville Road which will be closed under the highway.
The closure begins at 9 this morning. 481 North will close to all traffic at the Kirkville Road Exit 5E. All traffic headed north will have to exit at Kirkville Road and take Freemont Road to Route 298 where you can then follow signs to get back on the highway.
In addition, Kirkville Road, under the highway will be closed in both directions between the 481 overpass and Fremont Road.
DOT officials want to remind drivers to use patience, follow the detour signs, and expect backups starting with the afternoon rush hour later today.
NYS DOT Region 3 spokesman Gene Cilento says, "just take it easy, this is just, a relatively short duration project. It's going to involve a couple of weekend days as well. Just be patient with us, let us do our job, and everything should be fine."
The ramp from 481 South to westbound Kirkville Road and the eastbound Kirkville Road ramp to 481 south will remain open.
This bridge replacement project on 481 is expected to impact traffic until about noon on Monday. If you're wondering how this construction will specifically impact you, check out the 511NY.org website for information.
