Pet Pointers: A treat to bake for your pets

This time of year many of us dust off our cookie sheets and do a little baking. You may even want to try baking treats for your pets. In today’s Pet Pointers, Lisa Chelenza visits a professional with a recipe for your pets that you can try at home.

Mike and Shirley Martin opened Jo’s ‘Lil Cupcake Company and named it after their rescued terrier mix, Jo. While they primarily serve people, they also feature homemade dog treats. Shirley shows us how we can make Jo’s favorites at home.

Cheese and bacon puppy treats:

3/4 cup of whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup of unsalted butter (at room temp),
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 cup cheddar cheese
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cooked bacon bits

Combine flour, baking soda, salt, mix well and set aside. Cream together butter, sugar, egg and vanilla. Add flour to wet mixture and mix well. Stir in oats, cheese, wheat germ, and bacon (if mixture seems a little dry, I add a tablespoon or two of warm water)

Bake at 350 for 16 to 22 minutes. Makes about 40 to 50 treats. They can be kept in an airtight container for a week, or in the fridge for up to three weeks and also may be kept in the freezer for up to three months.
